Glossary of Terms

An optical viewfinder will enable you to turn off the LCD screen, saving on battery power.

Optical zoom gives better picture quality than digital zoom.

An LCD screen lets you see your images instantly.

Video output capability lets you record your images onto videotape or, better yet, view them on the TV screen.

CompactFlash memory cards are available in larger sizes than SmartMedia memory cards, but the memory card reader for SmartMedia is easier to use with most PCs.

A memory card reader will enable you to upload pictures to your PC much faster than if you upload directly from your camera.

Rechargeable batteries are much more economical in the long run than alkaline batteries. Some digital cameras come with rechargeable batteries and a charger unit as standard equipment, but most do not.

Even if you buy rechargeable batteries, make sure to buy extra alkaline batteries if you plan to take many pictures when you first open up your camera. Rechargeable batteries can take up to eight hours to charge for the first time.

An AC adapter will enable you to conserve batteries … both taking pictures and, more importantly, when you upload pictures directly from your camera to your PC.

A USB cable will let you upload to your PC directly from your camera faster than a serial cable (if your PC has a USB port).

Although memory cards can be used over and over again, having an extra one is important for times when you want to take a lot of pictures before you upload them to your computer.

Make sure you buy a camera which carries the manufacturer's Australian warranty. Gray market cameras are less expensive upfront, but may cost you a lot more if you need repairs and aren't covered by a good warranty
